Encephalitis

A video of my encephalitis story

Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis is a disease occurring when antibodies produced by the body’s own immune system attack NMDA receptors in the brain. NMDA receptors are proteins that control electrical impulses in the brain. Their functions are critical for judgement, perception of reality, human interaction, the formation and retrieval of memory, and the control of unconscious activities (such as breathing, swallowing, etc), also known as autonomic functions.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this! I’m a survivor of a different kind of autoimmune encephalitis/PANS. My symptoms weren’t nearly as severe as yours, but I remember how terrifying it was when I could finally understand how far gone I’d been, like I was alive, but not really there––that I’d lost who I was… And then fighting and hoping that I was going to get myself back. No one understands this until they’ve lived it themselves, because they can’t see from the outside how jumbled your brain is on the inside. You’re not alone, though. Thank you for putting this into words, and best wishes for continued healing!
