Lucy Dawson’s life was turned upside down in October 2016, a month before her 21st birthday, when she was taken into hospital with a serious illness. Three months later, she was diagnosed with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.
This is a rare brain disease occurring when antibodies produced by the body’s own immune system attack NMDA receptors in the brain. Lucy came close to death but thankfully lives to tell the tale.
Due to complications in hospital, Lucy is now permanently disabled with foot drop in her left leg. She has turned her life around to become a disabled model and advocate, working with big name brands and campaigning for better awareness of disability.
